Today's Mother Nature article:In and out
Seals, sea lions and walruses are sea mammals that spend part of their lives on land. They have flipper-like back legs, instead of a tail fin. Seals are brilliant swimmers, but clumsy on land.
The main reason seals, sea lions and walruses come out of sea is to mate and give birth.
How a female seal makes a den for its baby in the snow:
1)It looks for a gap in the ice. She will squeeze through the snow above and begin to make her den.
2)She makes a hollow in the densed snow. When she has finished, her baby will have a safe and cosy shelter.
3)The baby seal, called a pup, spends six weeks in the den.
