What is Thunder?
As lightning flashes across the sky, the air nearby gets very hot. The hot air expands very quickly(matter expands when heated). As it rushes outward, it bangs into the colder air, causing the air to shake with a loud sound. This is called Thunder.
Thunder and lightning happen at exactly the same time, but light travels faster than sound. That is why we always see lightning before we hear thunder.
