What causes lightning?
During a storm, the tiny water droplets in a cloud rub against each other. Each droplet becomes charged with a tiny amount of electricity. Because there are billions of droplets in a cloud, it has a huge charge of electricity.
When two storm clouds move close together, an electric flash jumps from one to another. This is called lightning.Sometimes lightning jumps down from the clouds to Earth. That is why you should stay indoors if you see lightning.
